(Lat. “testing”). A valuable trial of one’s worth (Jas 1:2–4, 12) or an inducement to commit sin (Jas 1:14–15). God is said to “tempt” Abraham (Gen 22:1–19; Heb 11:17–19) and to allow Job to be “tempted” (Job 1:1–2:13). The weakness of the flesh (Mark 14:38) and difficult circumstances (Luke 8:13) can lead us to do wrong. As the great tempter, the devil tried to lead Christ into sin, especially during his period in the desert after baptism (Matt 4:1–11; Mark 1:13; Luke 4:1–13). Tempted
